In 1963 two young entrepreneurs came together to create a new business venture. Soon after their initial meeting a 5,000 square foot factory in Sunderland was equipped with second hand machinery and production started with 5 employees under the name Modern Trends.
The assumption in 1963 was that high levels of pollution would do away with the fireplace. But the partners had faith in the human psyche’s need for a hearth as a focus for family life. How right they were. Fireplaces are now a big industry and Be Modern (as it became incorporated in 1964) is in the forefront.
